Hexane is an alkane and exists in 5 structural isomeric forms:  hexane, isohexane, 3-methylpentane, neohexane and 2,3-dimethylbutane.
Hexane can be obtained from petroleum through distillation. It can also be produced by electrolyzing a potassium butyrate solution. It is a widely-employed, organic solvent for the dissolution and isolation of fats and oils.
